On Independence Day
The Prime Minister addressed the nation today from the Red Fort. He spoke about many difficult issues facing India today: corruption, education, gender inequality, agriculture, economic development, etc.
For me, the most important thing to take away from the speech was just the last words:
We must believe that our democracy, our institutions and our social ideals and values have the capacity to face all problems. We all have to believe in ourselves. Believing that we can build a prosperous future. Believe that together we can do the hardest work. Let's all decide to build a prosperous future for the country.
Given the scale of some of the problems that the country is suffering from, this "faith" has become a very difficult issue for Indians. At private parties, on Facebook and other social forums, I constantly see my friends protesting and expressing their anger. The initial emotions are negative. A sense of victimization, a sense of helplessness, which turns into frustrated anger.
But I ask all my friends: Are you really unable? Really? There are many ways (hundreds of ways) to make a difference in your country. Go find it! Find those ways, and instead of sitting in front of your computer screen and languishing, do something. This is a very good use of your energy!
Protest is an important aspect of citizenship. But you get nothing for tearing down a building, *unless* you're building another one.
